Sitali Cooling Breath for Heat and Irritability

By , MSc Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Oxford

Sitali cools the body and calms irritability by drawing air over a curled tongue. It is a classic yoga technique for hot days, anger, or overheating after intense exercise.

How to Practice

  1. Sit comfortably upright. Roll your tongue lengthwise into a tube shape, or simply part your lips slightly if you cannot curl your tongue.
  2. Inhale slowly through the tube of your tongue for 4 counts, feeling the cool air pass over it.
  3. Close your mouth at the top of the inhale. Exhale slowly through the nose for 6 counts.
  4. Notice the cooling sensation in your mouth and throat with each inhale.
  5. Repeat for 8–10 cycles, or until you feel calmer and cooler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sitali breathing actually cool the body?

Yes. Sitali (also spelled sheetali) cools the body through two mechanisms: first, the evaporative cooling of air passing over the moist, curled tongue during the inhale lowers the temperature of the air entering the lungs; second, the longer exhale through the nose activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing the physiological heat response associated with stress and agitation. The cooling effect is tangible — most practitioners report a noticeable drop in oral and throat temperature within 5–8 cycles. Research by Telles et al. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2013) documented autonomic changes from pranayama practices including cooling techniques.

What if I can't curl my tongue for sitali breathing?

The ability to curl the tongue into a tube shape is genetic — roughly 65–70% of people can do it, and those who cannot are not at a disadvantage. The alternative technique is sitkari (also called 'hissing breath'): part your lips slightly, press your tongue lightly against the back of your upper teeth, and inhale through the small space between your slightly open lips. You will still feel a cooling, hissing sensation. Sitkari produces nearly identical physiological effects to sitali and is fully interchangeable for the cooling and calming purpose.

When is sitali breathing most useful?

Sitali is most effective in three specific situations: (1) in hot weather or after intense physical exertion when the body needs to cool down; (2) when experiencing anger, irritability, or 'heated' emotional states — the technique has an immediate grounding effect; (3) during menopausal hot flashes, where the rapid cooling effect on the mouth and throat can provide meaningful relief. In classical Ayurveda, sitali is traditionally recommended to balance excess pitta (heat) constitution. Avoid sitali in cold environments, as deliberately inhaling cold air can irritate airways.
